Belintash- a Thracian sanctuary

Belingtash is a believed to have served as a Thracian sanctuary. It is actually a rock, which has the form of a plateau, on which round holes and steps have been hewn.According to some the holes are situated in a way, which resembles a map of a part of the universe.

The site offers breathtaking views over the beautiful Rodope mountains.

This si the second largest Thracian sanctuary in Bulgaria after Perperek and is well worth visiting.

In near proximity are located Krastova Gora and Karadjov Kamak, also believed to be sacred places.

The rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo

The  Ivanovo rock monastiery has been included in the UNESCO heritage list of world sites. It has been founded around 1220s by the monk Yoakim, who later on became a Bulgarian Patriarch. The monastery boasts a number of rock churches, the most remarkable of which is the church of St Mary. It has wall paintings with exceptional artisitc qualities.

The Ivanovo Rock Monastery is located 22 km away from the town of Russe, within the Natural Park Reserve "Rusenski Lom".

Nowadays the monastery is not active, but it is open to visitors.
