This is Bulgaria!
The recently uncovered Basilica dates back to the IV century BC. This is the biggest and most impressive basilica from the early Christian times in Bulgaria, and one of the biggest on the Balkan Peninsula.
It features impressive architecture and extremely beautiful, very well preserved mosaics with interesting motives. They cover about 2,000 square meters of the Basilica's floor and most probably have been created by various craftsmen.
The Basilica is located in the Plovdiv city center and it well worth a visit.
This picturesque monastery is beautifully situated on the banks of the Iskar River amidst beautiful forest. It is located some 25 km south of Vratsa and is easliy accessible by car.
It has been restored back in the 17-th century by the reknowned Bulgarian painter and builder St. Pimen Zograf.
It has also been visited by the prominent Bulgarian writers Ivan Vazov and Aleko Konstantinov.
The former had a room with a balcony, overlooking the river, where he wrote some of his famous works, while the latter wrote "Bulgarian Switzerland" following a visit to the monastery.
Nowadays the monastery is inhibited by monks, and it offers food and accomodation. The Magernitsa (the monastery kitchen) offers a wide variety of traditional Bulgarian dishes.
